Brief Project Synopsis:

Since the nursing workforce shortage for bedside clinicians as well as nurse educators is a national phenomenon, it is not lkely that workforce needs can be met through recruitment of nurses from other regions of the country. While recruitment of foreign nurses has been done during past workforce shortages, the outcomes were mixed and raise ethical issues related to enticing critically needed resources from other countries whose needs exceed those in the United States. This program will recruit and develop local talent to meet the local needs. There are four major components to the NEO Nursing Faculty Corps. They are (1) supporting registered nurses' exploration of nursing education as an additional role or future focus of their practice, (2) providing career mentorshp including identifying available educational options for those interested in nursing education, (3) providing opportunities where nurses can increase their knowledge and skill about educational practices, and (4) increase the knowledge and skill among all nurse educators in the region related to the use of state-of-the-art and emerging technologies to support learning.

To achieve project goals, we have created four distinct activities. They are Exploring Nursing Education, Career Mentoring, the Nurse Faculty Academy, and the Advanced Learning Collaboratory. Exploring Nursing Education is based on the premise that a substantial proportion of the regional nursing workforce has masters or doctoral preparation and might consider supplementation or redirection of their practice to include a nurse educator role. Career Mentoring will provide shadowing experiences and a one-stop information center about graduate nursing programs in the region. The Nurse Faculty Academy provides knowledge and skill workshops to new and existing nurse educators on a range of topics and skills while the Advance Learning Collaboratory focuses on state-of-the-art and emerging technologies to support learning. The ALC will use three-day intensive workshops supplimented by web-based learning activities.

Project Goals and Objectives:

Our goals are (1) to increase the supply of new nursing faculty to meet the demand created by nursing faculty in north east Ohio who are expected to retire by 2010, (2) to increase the capacity of new and existing faculty in the use of simulation, experiential learning methods, and emerging information technologies, and (3) increase the number of certified nurse educators among academic nurse educators in north east Ohio.
