Hawai’i Partners in Nursing: Recruitment and Retention in Long Term Care

UH School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene with Maunalani Nursing and Rehabilitation Center; Kapiolani Community College with Leahi Hospital; Maui Community College with Hale Makua and Hawai’i Pacific University with the Hi’olani Care Center at Kahala Nui. An additional partner,VITEC, is housed within the Continuing Education and Training Division of Maui Community College.
The aims of the project include bringing together nursing educators and leaders to strategically develop and implement an integrated model of education and practice in LTC. A secondary aim is to assess the feasibility of establishing a statewide integrated model of education and practice in LTC that addresses 1) the critical need to attract new nurses into the geriatric specialty and 2) builds educational capacity in LTC facilities through the provision of continuing education and training to ensure nurses have appropriate clinical and leadership competencies.
Project Goals and Objectives:
Primary project objectives are to build partnerships to plan, develop, and pilot an integrated model of education and practice in LTC that includes a formalized student clinical placement initiative, faculty inservice education for LTC staff and a preceptor program for LTC staff.
A secondary objective is to establish a statewide LTC nursing workforce dataset that identifies the demographic characteristics of the population with the supply and demand data of nurses in the LTC sector to assist in strategically addressing the needs of the LTC workforce.
